The Disney+ series “Wonder Man,” has cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who will play Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man. After portraying Black Manta in 2018’s “Aquaman” and Dr. Manhattan in HBO’s 2019 series “Watchmen,” for which he earned an Emmy, Abdul-Mateen will be playing his third significant comic book role.
The Avengers #9 (cover dated October 1964) featured Wonder Man’s debut and what looked to be his demise. The Avengers #58 (November 1968), which revisited the events of #9 four years later, explained how they had electronically preserved Wonder Man’s consciousness in a computer.
The following appearance of Wonder Man was in The Avengers #102 (August 1972), where he made a brief cameo appearance while unconscious. Kang, the antagonist in The Avengers #131–132 (January–February 1975), the Black Talon, in The Avengers #152 (October 1976), and eventually the Living Laser, in The Avengers Annual #6, all restore Wonder Man’s body (1976). Following this last confrontation, Wonder Man is finally able to regain his faculties and join the Avengers.
In 1978, Stan Lee, who was then the publisher of Marvel Comics, remarked, “You know, years ago we brought out Wonder Man, and [DC Comics] sued us because they had Wonder Woman, and… I said okay, I’ll discontinue Wonder Man. After Marvel debuted Power Man, they all of a sudden have Power Girl. Oh, boy. How unfair.”
