Marvel Comics have reclaimed the rights to the famous sci-fi series Planet of the Apes, in which intelligent apes had taken control of the Earth in the far future. An omnibus collection of the original Planet of the Apes comics from the 1970s is their first brand-new offering for the franchise.
A new cover by artist E.M. Gist and a direct market-exclusive variant with a vintage Gil Kane & Mike Esposito series cover will be included with the omnibus collection of stories that were first published between 1974 and 1977 and were written by Doug Moench and illustrated by George Tuska and Alfredo Alcala.
Pierre Boulle’s science fiction book La Planète des singes, also known as Planet of the Apes in the US and Monkey Planet in the UK, was published in 1963. The Planet of the Apes media franchise was established with its adaptation into the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes.
The story centres on three Earth-based people who go to a planet circling the star Betelgeuse where gigantic apes predominate as the intelligent and cultured race while humans are degraded to a brutal animal-like existence.
Since 1968, there have been comic books featuring the Planet of the Apes. In addition to fresh plotlines and additional material, Marvel’s Adventures of the Planet of the Apes, which was published in the middle of the 1970s, included adaptations of the Planet of the Apes movies. Over the next years, the series was published by a variety of different companies, including Malibu Publishing’s Adventure Comics, Dark Horse Comics, BOOM! Studios, and others.
